The World Is Going Flat

Flat. Suede. Primer. Non-gloss. Call it whatever you want, this style in hot rod and custom car paint has been around too long to be considered a fad. And it’s too widespread to be dismissed as a half-baked alternative to a shiny finish.

Bet you didn’t know that “flat” technically only applies to one type of suede paint. Or that people in the paint industry have identified five various levels of non-gloss? I didn’t either until I started talking to some of these guys.

"Low Buck Suede” is the cover theme of the October issue of R&C. The story on the inside of the magazine (page 46) is based on hours of conversations I had with Brian Lynch from House of Kolor and several other guys who make a living developing paint and teaching enthusiasts all about it. Check it out for yourself.

And thanks for reading this shameless self promotion. Aren’t websites great?!
