Original Flathead Power Steering

Final Year Flattie P/S Upgrade

In a recent Rod & Custom article on power steering for Flathead engines (see the August 2009 issue or look under the Tech heading on this website), we mentioned the fact that Ford offered a factory power steering option in passenger cars in 1953, the final year of the Flathead. We asked anybody who has one of these systems to send us a photo. It didn’t take long before we got a reply.

Stuart Schouten from the San Diego area, sent us these photos of the engine in his ’53  Country Sedan, complete with the original power steering unit. He says the plan is to use it in his ’53 Country Squire one of these days.
