Braking the axle

Adding brake lines to the 8in

With the chassis brake lines already run on Project Purple Pig (check out http://www.rodandcustommagazine.com/techarticles/1001rc_1949_chevy_brake_lines/index.html ), I just had to add the lines to the rearend to complete the system.

bending brake lines
flaring the brake pipe end

As I knew I'd be removing the rear axle to underseal the trunk floor I figured I'd wait until then to add the brake lines to the rearend, as it'd be way easier with the axle out. Rather than make my own lines from scratch I bought ready-made lines with the ends flared and with fittings attached in 30- and 36-inch lengths. They still required bending of course, but the 30-inch line was the perfect length for the passenger side, while I only had to shorten the 36-inch line by around 3-inches and re-flare the end, making the whole job quicker and simpler. Cheap too, as both lines cost me $10.

So the axle's now back in the car and it's ready for the brakes to be bled. Next job is to fit all the items that require wiring (such as the Lokar shifter with the safety cutout switch) before installing the Ron Francis wiring harness. As the ABS brake master cylinder is electric, wiring it before bleeding the brakes may be a good idea!

Onwards and upwards...!
